Our inquiry related to celebrating success. We came up with the idea of successful role models. There were some challenges while we created our movie about role models but we got over them and had some fun at the same time.

St Kent's Day - by Solomone
It was a Friday morning like every Friday morning but then it was St Kent's day! When St Kent's came we had to be split into groups and go with two St Kent's boy and girl. When we we got organized we went to some activities the St Kent's made. I went to soccer first! It was amazing. I really had fun and enjoyed it so much but my team lost but at least I got to participate in it. After that my team got split up. I got to stay playing soccer. It was fun. After that game the other team won! After soccer the bell rang for morning tea. When morning tea was finish my team went to the music room and we played some music. After that we moved to the library and played some board games get it board games. I played chess and I won 3 games. I beat Popi, Mary and Brazie. Then I vs a St Kent boy. He won and I said good game and we shook hands. After that we moved to Zumba. It was cool we learned new dance moves. After that the bell rang and it was lunch time. St Kent's People made us some Sizzle sausages! After lunch time it was Culture groups and some of the St Kent's people came and watched us practice.
And that's what we did for St Kent's day!

What is Teamwork? - by Tyron
Teamwork is when you work with people and do something together and have fun. For an example: when you're cleaning up a room and people help and you all do it together that is called Teamwork. Teamwork is a good way of doing things faster and better. Team: Together Everyone Achieves More.

When we were making the cake we first had to take the cake and put it on a type of plate and Pupuke had to get some icing and spread it across the sides. It looked delicious already. Then Julianne and I had to put some kitkat around the edges and then it stuck to it sort of. The next thing we did was tip some M&Ms on the top of the cake and whala there you go a m&m cake with kitkat on the sides.

Working as a team - by Solomone
I loved the movie because Julianne, Tyron, Pupuke, Katrina and I made a cake! Mrs Buchanan was recording us. When we started we put the cake on the table and Pupuke put the icing on the sides to stick the Kit Kat on. After that we stuck the Kit Kat on and Katrina and I put the M&Ms on top. Then Julianne,Tyron and Pupuke helped us. When we were done we finished recording. I felt great because we got to make a cake! When it was lunch time, Julianne cut the cake and we got 1 piece of cake and 1 Kit Kat each.
We worked well together to make our movie. I used Panzoid to make the introduction about teamwork. Katrina used button base to make the beat for the background.
And That's What We Did For Our Movie! It was fun!

On The Road Again! - by Robati
Running is not allowed on the road.
On the road we always walk
Also when you're walking if someone hold their hand so they won’t run off.
Don’t just walk if you not patient for cars.
Parents always have to be your supervisor if you are with them.
And if you are not with a parent, make sure you look to your left and right.
To keep safe you have to: stop, look and listen.
Road Patrol is quite hard when you get nervous near the road
Or if you're used to the road you can do it easy
Look always - don’t stare at nothing - keep turning your head left to right.

Run Jump Throw - by Tyron
Day 1 with Declan
With Declan we first did a game called happy cone sad cone and what we had to do was if the cone was knocked over it is a sad cone and if it was standing up it is standing it is a happy cone. There were two teams one team had to knock the cone over and the other team was making them stand up. The team that was Knocking the cones down won the first round but it wasn't over there were still two more rounds but the game changed a bit the team that was knocking the cones over had to knock the cones down with there heads and the team who was picking the cones up right had to do it with their feet and the knocking down team won! again. Then after that we played a tag game and what you have to do is run after a partner and if Declan blows his whistle you have to freeze and the person that was chasing their partner had to try reach out and tag their partner and if they did the person that was chasing had to be running away. Coach Declan was telling us about running and how we start running and when you run your hands go cheek to cheek. Then the next activity we did was a relay you had to jump over cones that were in a line and run back. And now the last activity of the day we all played a shark game there were two sharks and the rest of the class were pirates there were hoops that the pirates had to stay in so the sharks won’t get them and the pirates can only stay in the hoop for less than five seconds.

An earthquake occurs - by Riiana
After the earthquake that hit Hanmer Springs and was felt in the south and north islands. The first and most horrific earthquake was a 7.5 magnitude on the Richter scale. A lot of people were confused because of how long the earthquake went on but the first one was followed by two mini ones.
Kaikoura and Wellington were the main places affected. A lot of tragic accidents have happened like two people have died in Kaikoura and Mt Lyford and Kaikoura has been flooded because a tsunami. A small amount of people a being flown out by a helicopter. Kaikouras drinking water has been cut off as well so they’re running low but luckily shipments are coming in to give them supplies to survive.
The tsunami that hit Kaikoura was caused by the 7.5 earthquake that hit on Monday 14 November. Here are a few tips if there is a tsunami coming.
- If you know there is a tsunami coming, don’t wait for sirens or anything like that.
- If you’re near the shore, plan an escape route.
- Never stay to watch a tsunami come in.
- Know the signs of a tsunami like the the shore being empty.
- Go straight to higher ground or inland, away from all the water.
I hope those four tips helped. Stay safe and be aware.

GOTTA READ EM ALL! - by Solomone
Going To The Film Festival
On Wednesday we went to the Manaiakalani film festival in Sylvia Park. It was cool when we went in the bus because I got to sit in the back. When we got there we went inside and waited for other schools to go out because they finished watching the movies before us.
When there were no more people coming out of the movies we went inside and we sat down on a chair and waited for the movies to start. It was cool because our video was second starting and it was funny but some people didn’t laugh but at the end they did.
When it was time to go we went outside and went in the bus to go back to school. My favourite movie was ours!

Yesterday Ruapotaka held its annual skipping display for family and whānau. Mary, Kuini and Pupuke jumped and jumped and jumped when they represented Room 10 at the senior endurance event. Everyone was then able to show off their individual skills with short ropes, in groups using a long rope and, lastly, double-dutch. It was good to be able to relax and watch Room 9 display their skills and tricks while we caught our breath!

Working together to face our challenges
We are back at Ruapotaka School but learning in the library instead of Room 10 at the moment. To help us think about working together as we face our latest challenges, we completed a teamwork challenge. Each team was given 25 straws, one strip of Blutak and five minutes to see who could build the tallest tower.
It wasn't really about the tallest tower, it was about taking turns to talk, listening to others, co-operating and collaborating as each team came up with a plan. It was wonderful to see three-quarters of the teams face this challenge successfully!

How will reading change your life?
Henry entertained us at our Duffy role model assembly at Tamaki Primary School this afternoon with his hilarious stories about reading at the library when he was a kid. The first book that he can remember reading at the library was Where the wild things are and by the time he was a teenager he was reading Shakespeare - which led him to drama school. Henry says that reading changed his life!
Robati was excited to receive a Goosebumps book from Henry. It'll be hard for Robati to put that down until he's finished!

On Wednesday the 17th August Kuini, Tristan, Fakaola, Pupuke, Shakaia, Saluselo, Bella, Katrina, Mary and I went in a Tamaki College van to inter school netball and Mr. Reid was driving. When we got there Mary and I had to practice shooting because we were the shooters. We had to play 6 games in total. Our first game was against Pt. England. We lost to them. 3rd place for me - by Leilani
On Tuesday my teacher Mrs Buchanan had told me that on Monday, when I was sick a lady called Rachel came over to our school on Monday. I was given a prize and a certificate from her for doing a good job blogging in the winter learning journey program but sadly I wasn't there. She had chosen three winners, I came third and Prudence came second and Jessica came first they also did a fantastic job on blogging as well. Then at the end of school my teacher had given me my prize and certificate to take home. I was so happy that I got this prize that when I got outside I was jumping around with excitement. In my prize I had a Rio DVD a green water bottle, water slingshot and three chocolates. When I got home my mum was very proud of me. The winter learning journey was fun for me and thank you to Rachel for my prize.

Tom and Vinicius Episode #2 - by Leilani
The search for just the right home:
Tom and Vinicius are trying to look for just the right home but it seem that all the homes in the forest have other animals living in them.
Leilani is blogging during the holidays to learn about the Olympic Games as part of the Winter Learning Journey.

Facing challenge and challenging faces
After making different 3D shapes with sticks, straws and blutak, we looked at 3D shapes from a different perspective. We cut out the nets of hexagonal and triangular prisms and then had to figure out how to glue the net to create the shape. A few people challenged themselves to make an icosahedron from a net: twenty triangular faces took a lot of effort to glue into shape!

He aha te tāima?
Kuini: He aha te taima?
Mary: Kua tekau karaka te tāima.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is a great time to practise what we already know and learn some new words and phrases in te reo. We had fun practising our numbers up to 100 and learning to ask and tell the time with a buddy. Ka pai, Rūma Tekau!

Let's talk!
Term 2 ended today with whole school speech finals at which Zion, Katrina and Saluselo represented Room 10. Zion loves learning about space and the planets and shared some amazing facts, while Saluselo told us all about the WWE wrestler, Joseph Ano'ai aka Roman Reigns. Congratulations to Katrina who came second in the Year 4-6 category with her information-packed speech about Steven Adams. Fantastic!
When it was time for first-language speeches, Julianne, Kuini and Tupouseini looked and sounded so proud to share some personal and family history with the audience.

Ka-ching!!
Start saving now ... ka-ching!! That was the message from Tessa when she visited Room 10 to teach us how to be smarter with money. She did this as part of the ASB bank's GetWise financial literacy programme. We remembered some ways we might earn money when we are a little bit older. We remembered about saving vs. spending. We learnt that we can save a little bit more by choosing to save our money with a bank. This is because the banks pay interest which adds extra money to the money already in our account. Ka-ching!!

Maths time! - by Henry

Shake, shake!
From farm to table: we have been learning how milk is made, what is made from milk and how milk gets to our table. The Fonterra milk that we drink at school has been on quite a journey before it arrives at our desks.
As we buy our milk, cream, butter, cheese and yoghurt at the shops, it is hard to imagine that around 150 years ago, there were no fridges and many families in New Zealand made their own butter.
What did those families have to do to make butter? Churn the cream! Although our cream came from a supermarket (not a farm), we were able to make our own butter for our table by shaking and whisking. It took almost as much energy as fitness!
The cream thickened before changing into solid yellow blobs in a thin white liquid. We strained off and squeezed out the buttermilk liquid and, voilá, delicious butter to spread on our bread.

FLiP!
FLiP is a financial literacy programme developed by PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) for Year 5 and 6 students. Nikki and Sigred, our coaches from PwC, visited Room 10 for four sessions to share their knowledge about being smarter with money. We learnt about saving and spending, being a responsible borrower, protecting our identity and different types of insurance. After learning lots of new words and learning through fun activities, we were each presented with achievement certificates at our final session yesterday.

A blogging challenge!
A special visitor, Rachel Williams from the University of Auckland, came to Room 10 yesterday to tell us all about an online holiday blogging programme she is running during the holidays - from Saturday 9th July until Sunday 24th July. She has created all sorts of writing activities to do with the Olympic Games in Rio.
If we decide to take up her blogging challenge, there are different activities to be completed every day about the Olympic Games. Each time we blog about an activity, we are given points! Certificates for everyone who blogs! Prizes for the most active bloggers with the most points!
