FLiP!

FLiP is a financial literacy programme developed by PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) for Year 5 and 6 students. Nikki and Sigred, our coaches from PwC, visited Room 10 for four sessions to share their knowledge about being smarter with money. We learnt about saving and spending, being a responsible borrower, protecting our identity and different types of insurance. After learning lots of new words and learning through fun activities, we were each presented with achievement certificates at our final session yesterday.

A blogging challenge!

A special visitor, Rachel Williams from the University of Auckland, came to Room 10 yesterday to tell us all about an online holiday blogging programme she is running during the holidays - from Saturday 9th July until Sunday 24th July. She has created all sorts of writing activities to do with the Olympic Games in Rio.

If we decide to take up her blogging challenge, there are different activities to be completed every day about the Olympic Games. Each time we blog about an activity, we are given points! Certificates for everyone who blogs! Prizes for the most active bloggers with the most points!

The Vector Trip - by Saluselo

Following Vector's visit to Ruapotaka earlier in Term 2, a group of students from Ruapotaka, including ten from Room 10, visited Vector Arena in the city on Tuesday. They were lucky enough to look behind the scenes at the events centre.  They even checked out the chill-out zone where the stars hang out. They also explored how Vector, the energy company, is investigating new technologies to charge electric cars.

Frosted curls and a golden star

Despite today being the shortest day of 2016, we finally replanted our Room 10 garden! We read the information labels, planned our plot and measured the distance between each plant. Lots of digging, lots of earth and lots of smiles as we watched our garden take shape. We will water and watch to see how our native grasses and other plants grow. The coprosma, Golden Star, reminds us of Matariki.

JAE COACHING SNAG GOLF! - by Solomone

On Thursday we played snag golf with this man named Jae. If you don't know what snag golf is it is  similar to regular golf but snag golf is when you can use your hands or your golf club. When we played we had to hit these targets with the ball and when we throw the ball it sticks on the target. When we started hitting the target it changed. When we started playing Mr Jae gave people golf clubs. Robati and I had to hit the ball with the golf club and we tried to hit the target and score a snag for my team. The rest of the team had thought that it was hard but some boys said it was easy peasy. Then we had to roll the ball in the hula hoop.

And that's my day playing snag golf!

What is the area of our garden?

We are learning about area. We are learning to measure the area of a rectangle. We started by working with a buddy to find out how many squares of paper it took to cover our paper "garden".  We all agreed that it took 18 squares.

A challenging assembly!

Room 10 learners were proud to share their latest Cybersmart learning at our senior syndicate assembly yesterday. With little practice and without scripts, everyone did an amazing job improvising as they introduced their screencasts and videos ... and performed The Running Man Challenge! Will Room 9 respond to the challenge in two weeks' time?
