A Celebration For Parents - by Robati
After school I went to the road and I saw my mum. She was waiting in the car for me to go home. When I came to her, I told her to come and visit my class to get my new chromebook so she followed me.
When we arrived at my class, I showed her my google drive, class site, class blog and one of my favourite pieces of writing. She read my writing and she was laughing.
I showed her a form with some questions that she had to do on my chromebook. When she had done it, I could take it home after she had signed a form for Mrs Buchanan. I showed her why I wanted to take my chromebook home in a video. Fiona, Yayleen and my mum were laughing when they saw the video. I had to show them what I had to do so she knows what I am learning. Also she could even learn from me what I have done.
I enjoyed eating the snacks with cheese and crackers. The cheese was tasty with the crackers.

Weather wins 1-0
Although the sun was shining, the Year 5/6 soccer team were feeling a little sad this morning because the interschool tournament was cancelled for the second time due to the weather. The weather forecast was spot on, though, as the wind and rain did arrive in the middle of the morning.

Food for thought
On Thursday, we were privileged to hear Fay's real life experience about how the food and exercise choices we make affect our everyday lives. She shared her challenging journey of change from a teenager who struggled at sport because it was too hard to move around to an athlete who finished 6th at her college cross-country in her final year at school. Thank you for sharing your inspirational and moving story with us, Fay.

Still Life: Positive and negative
We are still living life to the full in Room 10! We created a second still life sketch of an apple using chalk on black paper, while still thinking about shape and shading. We found that we could add more detail to our shading using a pencil but most of us preferred creating the negative image with chalk because we could smudge the chalk to even out the shading.

Rhyming Family Poem
Robati did an awesome job checking out the Screencastify Chrome extension today. He found it much simpler to use than Snagit - and we had no technical hitches! Here he reads his humorous rhyming family poem created during free-choice writing yesterday.

How cool is our haiku?
Duffy, our reading hero, is holding a competition for a new T-shirt design. This new design is going to include a haiku on the back of the T-shirt - so we have been reminding ourselves about the structure and pattern of a haiku. This is an example that Kuini, Tupouseini and Mary created.

An energetic afternoon!
Yesterday, Vector, the energy company, brought one of its school programmes, Be Sustainable with Energy, to Ruapotaka for Years 6, 7 and 8. We learnt about the different sources of energy that Vector uses to make electricity in New Zealand. Prudence, Saluselo, Zion, Katrina and Tyron created electricity using mechanical energy as they turned mini-turbines, while Pupuke and Azahar demonstrated how solar power can be used to turn the rotors on a model helicopter. What an energetic afternoon!

Crossing the river!
This morning we challenged ourselves to work in groups to solve a problem: how could we work together successfully to cross the imaginary river in Room 10?
We came up with some different strategies but the most successful team ripped up their two pieces of paper to make small "stepping stones" to cross the river without getting wet! It was fantastic to see such wonderful teamwork, cooperation and collaboration.

Still life
Our first week of term was drawing to a close: life stood still as we focused on sketching and shading our still life apple and its cast shadow.

Mary's six-word holiday
We are learning to search Creative Commons to find images to support our learning. If we use an image that someone else has created, we have to show that we are allowed to use the image and where it has come from (attribute the image). It is quite tricky!
Mary remixed a Google drawing to share an event that she enjoyed in the holidays.
