Celebrating Success! - by Bella

Our inquiry related to celebrating success. We came up with the idea of successful role models. There were some challenges while we created our movie about role models but we got over them and had some fun at the same time.

2nd place - by Prudence

On Monday Rachel came to our school. She came to do the prizes and certificates for the Winter Learning Journey. She gave some people certificates and 3 people prizes. 3rd place was Leilani. 2nd place was me and 1st place was Jessica. When Rachel called my name my heart was pumping. It was hard to hold my prizes. For my prize I got a basketball, drink bottle, Rio 2 DVD, Slingshot, 2 chocolate bars and a book. I liked doing Winter learning Journey.

The Vector Trip - by Saluselo

Following Vector's visit to Ruapotaka earlier in Term 2, a group of students from Ruapotaka, including ten from Room 10, visited Vector Arena in the city on Tuesday. They were lucky enough to look behind the scenes at the events centre.  They even checked out the chill-out zone where the stars hang out. They also explored how Vector, the energy company, is investigating new technologies to charge electric cars.

Thank you, Saluselo, for creating this video at home to share some of the photos from your visit.

A challenging assembly!

Room 10 learners were proud to share their latest Cybersmart learning at our senior syndicate assembly yesterday. With little practice and without scripts, everyone did an amazing job improvising as they introduced their screencasts and videos ... and performed The Running Man Challenge! Will Room 9 respond to the challenge in two weeks' time?

Weather wins 1-0

Although the sun was shining, the Year 5/6 soccer team were feeling a little sad this morning because the interschool tournament was cancelled for the second time due to the weather.  The weather forecast was spot on, though, as the wind and rain did arrive in the middle of the morning.

An energetic afternoon!

Yesterday, Vector, the energy company, brought one of its school programmes, Be Sustainable with Energy, to Ruapotaka for Years 6, 7 and 8. We learnt about the different sources of energy that Vector uses to make electricity in New Zealand. Prudence, Saluselo, Zion, Katrina and Tyron created electricity using mechanical energy as they turned mini-turbines, while Pupuke and Azahar demonstrated how solar power can be used to turn the rotors on a model helicopter. What an energetic afternoon!

Remembering at Ruapotaka

As ANZAC Day falls during the school holidays, Ruapotaka held a special assembly on Friday to remember all the soldiers and nurses who travelled to foreign lands to serve New Zealand during World War I. We remembered by wearing our poppies and by listening to students read poems. Prudence read her ANZAC poem on behalf of Room 10.

Keep your eye on the ball!

Last week our Year 4, 5 and 6 students travelled by bus to St Kentigern College in Pakuranga for a PE session with some senior students from St Kents. As well as running, throwing and catching team games in the gym, a few students, including Bella, enjoyed learning some tennis skills.  Such concentration!

A colourful start

To begin our new year in Room 10, we are thinking about ourselves, our learning and our goals.  We are each creating bright and inventive self-portraits in the style of the Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, as we make a colourful start to 2016.  What do you notice about our pictures?

Down the back of the chair!

This afternoon Room 10 were excited to host senior syndicate assembly to share what we learnt and created during our Book Week.  Did you know that the New Zealand author, Margaret Mahy, had over 200 books published for children and young adults?  As well as sharing this and other interesting facts in a quiz, we read her hilarious poem, Down The Back Of The Chair.  Our artwork will be displayed in the library once we have pulled out everything that hides down the back of the chair!

Lazy Boy!

This week we have watched some movies from the Manaiakalani Film Festival 2014 to find out what kinds of films other schools and classes have created.  We are also learning about the techniques that were used to create the movies.  We thought The Last Apple and Lazy Boy were hilarious.

After watching the movies, we wrote our ideas about what we had learnt.  Here is an example:
